The Department of Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a surgical branch of dentistry and this speciality is the art and science of skill and acuity. This specialization aims in addressing various fractures of facial bones, pathologies, orthognathic surgery pertaining to head and neck emphasizing prevention and awareness of the disease and deformity among the population.

OVERVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT:

UNDERGRADUATE AND POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMS:

The department offers undergraduate programs that also includes hands-on training in minor surgical procedures and exceptional training for post-graduates indicating a comprehensive approach to advanced dental and maxillofacial education.

AWARENESS ACTIVITIES:

Basic life support (BLS) programs conducted for medical and non-medical population for handling emergency situations

RESEARCH TRAINING:

The department conducts research to gather data on trauma care, pathologies, orthognathic surgery and facial aesthetics. This information helps in developing evidence-based strategies for management of oral health issues. The institution inculcate the post-graduates to attend peripheral postings for orofacial clefts and oral cancers at various esteemed centers to enhance the clinical and practical knowledge in all sub-specialities of oral surgery. The department places significant emphasis on developing research skills among dental students, which can contribute to advancements in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

GOALS:

The goal of the oral & maxillofacial surgery program is to provide a basic and advanced education in oral & maxillofacial surgery thus helping a student to be able to deal with the various pathologies of the teeth, face and the jawbones.

OBJECTIVES:

  • To train and develop a tender surgical skill amongst post graduate students to manage challenging and medically compromised patients suffering from maxillofacial traumatic injuries, maxillofacial pathologies, maxillofacial cancers and expose them to recent advances in the maxillofacial surgery.
  • To train and educate undergraduate students for various minor and major surgeries of oral and maxillofacial surgery with adequate confidence and competence even in the medically compromised patients.
  • To establish the repute of the department as the state of the art tertiary care centre in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery amongst various teaching institutes.
  • To provide quick affordable quality of oral surgical care to the outdoor and indoor patients of the department.
  • To train the undergraduate and postgraduate students of the institute for evidence based literatures search and education system to promote research in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
  • To constantly upgrade for inclusion of latest equipments in the department for welfare of the patients.

Prof Balaji enthralled the audience by showcasing many of his advanced and state-of-the-art craniofacial and maxillofacial surgical procedures. He further encouraged the students by answering all their questions enthusiastically. He also distributed several textbooks authored by him to the best outgoing students of each year.
